Cody Anderson, K4ZXT, is assisting Eric Franks, KK4DKW, in recruiting amateur radio volunteers for this year’s Cherohala Challenge Bicycle Races on June 6, 2026.
The Cherohala Challenge features three routes: 35, 62, and 115 miles. The 35- and 62-mile routes have been completely redesigned this year and will begin in Vonore, TN, traveling through the valleys of Monroe, McMinn, Loudon, and Roane Counties.
The 115-mile route also starts in Vonore but quickly transitions into significant elevation gain. Riders will climb US-129 (The Dragon) into North Carolina, pass through the Joyce Kilmer–Slickrock area, continue onto the Cherohala Skyway, and then cross back into Tennessee through rural Monroe County before returning to Vonore. The 115-mile route includes more than 10,000 feet of elevation gain.
This event presents communication challenges as well as physical ones. Large portions of the course have little to no cellular coverage, making amateur radio a critical component of event safety and coordination. Approximately 30 radio volunteers are needed to provide full communications support.
Volunteers are needed to:
- Staff official water/rest stops
- Provide course communications
- Provide SAG vehicles to assist and transport riders as needed
This is an excellent opportunity for Blount County ARES members to support a major regional event, exercise field communications capabilities, and work alongside neighboring counties in a real-world operational environment.
